| | Following shock news Warner Brothers had 'canned' the upcoming Batgirl movie, DC fans were offered a silver lining on Thursday as film bosses revealed the release date of the much anticipated Joker sequel.
According to Deadline, Joker 2: Folie à Deux, which is said to be a musical, will hit cinemas October 4 2024, five years after the Oscar winning original.
At the end of the first movie, Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix, who won the Best Actor award for the role) found himself inside Arkham Asylum before he made a daring escape and it's believed the sequel will largely be set within the institution.

Lady Gaga, 36, is reportedly in early talks to play iconic character Harley Quinn in the movie.
She will follow in the footsteps of Margot Robbie who starred as the villain in 2016's Suicide Squad, 2020's Birds of Prey and 2021's The Suicide Squad.

While the sequel's plot is currently unknown 'Folie à deux' is a French phrase literally meaning 'shared madness.' It's used to describe a delusion shared by two people in close proximity.
The website went on to reveal that filming would likely begin in December before a long editing process.
While the original 2019 Joker was never intended to have a sequel, its critical and commercial success lead director Todd Phillips said in August 2019 that he might be interested in making a sequel, if Phoenix were interested in returning.
According to Box Office Mojo, the film grossed over $1 billion on a budget of just $55 million.

The filmmaker signed on to direct and co-write the script with his original Joker writing partner Scott Silver in May 2021.
In June he took to his Instagram to share a photo of his lead actor reading the script for the first time.
Donning a pinstripe suit the actors thinning hair was combed over to the right and his white beard was groomed into a well-kept, but still bushy, style.
Phillips also shared a picture of the script's cover, red with black lettering, as he revealed the movie's title for the first time.
